Making Instagram Make Sense for Your Business

Instagram can be a powerful tool for your business. But if opening the app leaves you wondering what to post, where everything lives, or what the algorithm even wants from you anymore, you’re definitely not alone.
On August 26, Cait hosted our Intro to Instagram for Business: The Essentials class at the Get Social With Cait office in Meridian, bringing local business owners together for a hands-on morning of Instagram basics, practical tips, and plenty of questions.
The goal? Make Instagram feel a whole lot less overwhelming.
Back to the Basics
There are a lot of moving pieces inside Instagram, especially when you’re trying to use it for a business instead of casually scrolling.
During the class, Cait broke down the platform from the ground up so attendees could better understand not just what each feature does, but how it can actually support their business.
We covered topics including:
Navigating Instagram and understanding where to find the tools you actually need
The differences between personal, creator, and business accounts
Optimizing your profile so new visitors quickly understand who you are and what you offer
The differences between Posts, Reels, Stories, and Carousels
When and why businesses should use each type of content
How Instagram determines what content appears in someone’s Feed, Reels, and recommendations
Engagement and how your interactions help build stronger connections with your audience
Simple ways to start creating content without feeling like you need to do everything at once
Because knowing where the buttons are is helpful. Knowing why you’re using them? Even better.
Your Instagram Profile Is Your First Impression
One of the biggest takeaways from the class was the importance of looking at your Instagram profile through the eyes of someone discovering your business for the first time.
Can they quickly tell what you do? Is your name searchable? Does your bio explain how you can help them? Is there an obvious next step they can take?
Social media is the modern-day handshake, and your profile plays a big role in that first impression.
We walked through ways businesses can make their profiles clearer, more searchable, and easier for potential customers to navigate without completely overhauling everything they’ve already built.
Posts, Reels, Stories... Oh My.
You do not need to use every Instagram feature every single day.
Yes, we said it.
Instead, the class broke down the role each content format can play in your strategy.
Posts and Carousels can educate, tell a story, or give people information worth saving. Reels can help introduce your business to new audiences and bring personality into your content. Stories are great for staying connected with the people already following you and showing the day-to-day side of your brand.
The magic happens when those pieces start working together.
Understanding the Algorithm Without Letting It Run Your Life
Of course, we had to talk about the algorithm.
Rather than chasing every supposed “hack,” Cait explained the bigger picture behind how Instagram personalizes what users see based on their activity, interests, relationships, and the content they interact with.
The takeaway was simple: create content your audience actually wants to watch, save, share, or respond to.
Instagram may change constantly, but building genuine connections with the people on the other side of the screen never goes out of style.
The Best Part? Putting It Into Practice.
Our classes are designed to be interactive for a reason.
Attendees were able to follow along on their own accounts, ask questions specific to their businesses, and get a better understanding of how the things we discussed could fit into their own social media strategy.
You don’t have to become a social media expert overnight. You just need a starting point, a little direction, and a plan that makes sense for you.
And that’s exactly what Intro to Instagram for Business is all about.
